The stock Yamaha WR250R (and WR250X) do not come from the factory with any type of skid plate to protect the engine and frame. If you plan to do any serious off-road riding with your WR250R, we definitely recommend upgrading to a quality skid plate. We like using plastic skid plates whenever possible, because they seem to vibrate less and are a little quieter than the aluminum skid plates. These bikes tend to make a bit of a racket with an aluminum skid plate, so that’s why we use the plastic skid plates on both of our project bikes.

Our favorite skid plate for the WR250R and WR250X is the Moose Racing PRO Plastic skid plate (shown above), which we have installed on both our WR250R and WR250X project bikes. This skid plate, manufactured by AXP Racing in Europe, and imported by Moose Racing, is made from flexible high-density Polyethylene plastic that is 6mm thick for maximum protection of your bikes engine and frame. Unlike aluminum, the plastic construction absorbs impacts, does not undergo deformations, does not generate vibrations, and is 40% lighter than aluminum. These are very simple to install on these bikes, and all mounting hardware is included.
